Background: What Is Book Coach Corner?

Book Coach Corner is a blog series that allows me (your neighborhood-friendly book coach) to analyze books, TV shows, and movies. I then dissect them in terms of story structure. As a heads up: there will be spoilers, and some posts may not make sense if you haven’t seen/read the work.

This month’s post is a weird one. I found a book I really didn’t like, and it led me down a path of discovery. I was forced to ask myself “Why did I hate this book so much?” This inner journey helped me figure out a few things about the publishing industry and personal narratives that made lemonade out of narrative lemons.

Synopsis

I have no desire to insult a writer or take away from their work, (writing books is so hard!) so I’m talking in generalities about this piece. The top-level summary is that it’s a self-help book that I read for a book club.

Quick Thoughts

After some analysis, I realized two key things drove me away from this book:

  1. The book was sold as a self-improvement book about a specific topic. But…about twenty pages in, you discover that it’s a thinly veiled way for the author to sell their product. The core content of the book could be…
