Hot Take: Writing Can Really Suck

I often laugh at Medium because so many articles in my feed read like bad inspirational speaker presentations. They’re tediously positive.

  • You can get 10K followers in 3 weeks!
  • How I made 7 figures in 10 minutes while dying my dog’s hair.
  • If you can dream it it’s already done in the Believe-o-sphere.

And, don’t get me wrong, there is a wonderful place for those headlines and articles, but when you’re inundated with them daily, they get a bit, well…cloying.

And, in my own experience, about 50% of being a writer is absolutely miserable. Like, I write a lot. I usually do 45 minutes of solid writing a day. But the rest of my day is spent hating that 45 minutes of writing or wallowing in self-doubt. The only reason I consider myself a writer is because I keep writing in spite of that. If I could quit, I would. Trust me.

So, whenever I have an opportunity to share my own misery in a pseudo-helpful light, I leap at it. My last round of beta reads was one such incident.

A review this past summer birthed another.
